Choosing the right domain name for a website or an online business is never going to be easy unless you have an existing brand and the domain name hasn't already been registered. Not only is the domain market now full of industry specific extensions but there is also the age old question, do I buy a .com or a .co.uk? There are some that automatically opt for a .com, however, data collected by the UK domain registry Nominet, shows that maybe the .uk extension should be the first option.

At the end of 2016, Nominet conducted a survey regarding domains ending .uk. The results show that websites with domain names ending in .uk are the users' preferred extension over all others. If you are a UK business using a non-uk extension then this can have negative implications for your click through rate and your competitors may gain the edge when it comes to organic traffic because of this. UK domains are now more popular than ever and one is registered every 5 seconds (source : Nominet November 2016) and not even the introduction of other random extensions could damage their registration rate.
